Self Tanner Extrodinaire

If you are anything like me when the snow melts (ugh! Canadian winter's!) you are counting the days until you can slip on a pair of cute sandals and flash those perfectly manicured toes.... OK well maybe not perfectly manicured but no foot is perfect after being suffocated in 2 pairs of socks and over sized brown boots for 4 months! In any case, the toes, and the shoes are never complete without a little bit of leg colour to keep your pedi bright. In the last 10 years I have tried everything from Jurgens to Shesheido in self tanners and this is what I have found to be the most long lasting, non streaky and especially as odourless as humanly possible.

For a very odorless and smooth application I really like Clairins Delicious Self Tanning Cream. Clairin's has generally been extremely consistent with their quality of self tanners, they are always delivering very close to the perfect tan without streaks and without many applications. Their self tanners (especially the gel self tanners) are easy to distribute because of their silky consistency and usually have additional ingredients like Cocoa bean extract to keep your skin hydrated! Clairin's self tanners range from approximately $28-$45 in price, but let me tell you they are worth it! For a less expensive alternative L'Oreal has a great spray on self tanner for those hard to reach spots (L'Oreal Sublime Bronze). The spray application also helps to keep your tan consistent all over your body BUT be weary, you have to hold the canister a safe distance from your skin in order to avoid concentrated spots of colour. The best trick to follow with both products mentioned is start by lightly moisturizing the skin where you will be applying the self tanner paying special attention to elbows, wrists, knees and ankles as well as anywhere where the application stops. This will help to avoid any lines or colour patches that appear later on. L'Oreal self tanning products range from $8-$15 in price.

Lastly if you are looking for a quick fix before heading out for the day or night and don't have the time to work in a self tanner Rimmel makes an excellent wash off spray tan that will last and won't stain your clothes. Again I do have to caution that with all makeup type products they do need some time to dry so its best to spray yourself before getting dressed.

Remember a fake tan is a healthy tan :)

Hey Product Queen-

This was a great post, I am totally going to try the Clarins. One question - do you use the same product on your face, or do they make a co-ordinating face product? What do you use? I hate it when the face product and the body product don't match... Also, where do you begin with one and end with the other? Chin line? neck? décolletage? Help!

Hi! Yes, Clairins does have a self tanner for your face in addition to the body cream. It tends to be a little less oily and allows for several applications so you can adjust your color according to your complexion.

The best way to apply face self tanner would be to start with a nickle size amount of product and dab it on your forehead, checks, nose, and chin. Rub the product in a circular motion focusing outwards. Its always a good idea to prep your face with a light moisturizer first in order to avoid concentrated colour spots where there may already be dry skin. Also, make sure to apply a little extra moisturizer to the jawline so that you can work the self tanner down onto your neck for a very natural look. A good place to avoid applying self tanner is to the upper lip area, I have seen the unfortunate outcome of this and it ain't pretty! Think 5 o'clock shadow, yikes!
In any event, it's always a great idea to ask for a sample, I know shoppers drug mart carries small tubes of Clairins self tanner that they are more than happy to hand out. Give it shot ahead of time to ensure its the best product for you :)
I hope this helps!
